What Is Backdooring?
Backdooring is the unauthorized use, disclosure, transfer, or monetization of financing applications, borrower information, or proprietary deal data obtained through a legitimate business relationship.
The Commercial Finance Integrity Alliance is an independent, industry-wide coalition dedicated to protecting deal integrity and strengthening trust in commercial finance.
The problem
Backdooring occurs when financing files or deal information entrusted to a lender or third party are improperly diverted or monetized by another party without authorization. It undermines legitimate origination relationships, erodes confidence and may expose merchants to unwanted solicitation or data misuse.
Backdooring can harm every participant in the commercial finance ecosystem:
Brokers
Lost commissions, wasted resources, damaged origination relationships.
Lenders
Reputational risk, weaker partner trust and increased compliance exposure.
Merchants
Unsolicited outreach, privacy concerns and confusion about who handles their information.
The industry
Diminished transparency, lower confidence and higher transaction friction.
Our solution
The Commercial Finance Integrity Alliance (CFIA) is an independent coalition committed to preventing backdooring and restoring trust throughout commercial finance. Its work will center on standards, accountability, education, and technology-enabled prevention.
